About Food Insecurity

It is time for a new approach to addressing food insecurity. By the time the global pandemic began, there were already more food insecure people in Canada than ever before – 4.4 million, or nearly 13% of all households.[i] In Peterborough, 14.5% (about 1 in 7) of households are food insecure and, in 2011-14, half of all female lone-parent families lived with food insecurity.[ii] Local research found already-marginalized local residents, such as those identifying as low-income, lone mothers, youth, and LGBTQ+ people, experienced increased challenges around accessing food during the first wave of the pandemic.[iii] However, most people in Canada who experience food insecurity do not seek support from food banks.[iv] It is becoming increasingly apparent that we need more effective and enduring solutions that include adequate incomes, universal affordable childcare, and affordable housing.
