Peterborough’s Vital Signs Shines a Light on Gender (In)Equality in our Community

The Community Foundation of Greater Peterborough’s newly released Vital Signs report highlights the need to advance gender equality in our community.

“The Kawartha World Issues Centre received a grant from the Foundation last year to conduct research into how our region is fairing on the issue of gender equity,” says Jennifer DeBues, Executive Director of the Community Foundation.

The subsequent report, Vital Focus: Gender Equality, highlights some of the ways local women and gender diverse individuals have been disproportionately affected by the pandemic, and how many are being left behind when it comes to accessing services and supports.

Gender equality is foundational for social justice and healthy, prosperous, and safe communities. “We all have a role to play in advancing intersectional gender equality in Peterborough/Nogojiwanong,” explains KWIC Executive Director, Sam Rockbrune. “We work towards gender equality by addressing racial, social, and economic inequalities.”

The Vital Signs report, and grants to organizations like KWIC, are ways in which the Community Foundation spotlights those voices.

5. Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls
5. Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls

5. Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls

While the world has achieved progress towards gender equality and women’s empowerment under the Millennium Development Goals (including equal access to primary education between girls and boys), women and girls continue to suffer discrimination and violence in every part of the world.

Gender equality is not only a fundamental human right, but a necessary foundation for a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world.

Providing women and girls with equal access to education, health care, decent work, and representation in political and economic decision-making processes will fuel sustainable economies and benefit societies and humanity at large.
